Single Use Plastics Directive: NGOs call on Commission and EU countries to resist attempts to undermine separate collection of plastic bottles

Deposit return systems (DRS) are the most effective way to reach the 90 percent collection target for plastic bottles – Possible misguided interpretation of separate collection target is concerning – Post-sorting of residual waste does not equal separate collection, it leads to low material quality and does not solve the pollution problem – Only DRS will enable high quality bottle-to-bottle recycling and effective littering reduction – Discussions about post-sorting could undermine the objectives of the EU Single Use Plastics Directive.
